At 36 weeks pregnant, the aim is to make your existing plan easier to use. Check the bag and contact note you have already started rather than rebuilding them from a longer internet list. Practical readiness can be simple.
Your Baby This Week
The NHS gives an approximate head-to-heel length of 47.4 cm. Your baby continues preparing for life outside the womb, but a weekly average cannot tell you what care an individual baby would need if born now.
Changes in Your Body
Backache, heartburn or sleep interruptions may continue. This is still before 37 weeks, so do not assume possible labour symptoms are a routine final-week experience; contact your maternity team for advice.
Common Experiences
You may feel prepared in one area and uncertain in another. A final check is not an exam: it is a chance to notice a missing charger, confirm a number or ask a question while you have time to do so.
Your Practical Checklist
- Compare your hospital bag with your own care setting's guidance.
- Keep identification and maternity records together where they can be found.
- Save urgent contact numbers on both your phone and your support person's phone.
- Confirm transport and arrangements for anyone depending on you at home.
- Check that your support person knows where the bag and documents are.
Do a verbal walk-through: if you needed advice tonight, who would call, where would you go and who would handle the household? You do not need to predict when birth will happen to make those instructions clear. Leave space in the bag for items you use daily and write a short reminder for them.
Questions for Your Care Team
What is my baby's current position, and when will it be reviewed? Is anything still outstanding in my birth-care plan? What should I do if my waters may have broken? Which signs mean I should call immediately?
When to Seek Professional Advice
Contact your maternity team immediately about changed or reduced movements. Seek urgent advice for bleeding, fluid leakage, severe headache, vision changes or sudden swelling. Before 37 weeks, call about regular tightenings or unusual backache.
Coming Next
Week 37 focuses on the waiting period and following your individual maternity contact plan.
